In this article, we discuss the best VPNs for mobile legends, and what impact a VPN can have on the game overall.

There’s a lot that can be considered for a VPN, especially when it comes to gaming, but when it comes to MLBB, there are four key factors that you should take into account:

The Best Mobile Legends VPN Services – In-depth Analysis

The best VPNs for Mobile Legends listed above all provide users with features that you need to get the most out of Mobile Legends. However, they also have their own unique features. ExpressVPN is the best VPN for Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. They have super-fast VPN servers located worldwide. It is perfect for beating slow Mobile Legends servers.

    • Hulu

ExpressVPN offers a top-quality service that doesn’t cut corners. With a global network of high-speed servers, it is ideal for Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, making it easy to connect to faster servers, and keeping your IP and internet usage hidden. Its solid encryption is great for bypassing government surveillance, censorship, and network restrictions, as well as protecting you from DDoS attacks.

The only challenge with Express is its premium price point. It might be enough to put some people off, but you certainly do get what you pay for. Fortunately, Express offers a generous 30-day money-back guarantee and exceptional 24/7 customer service for users. Overall, we think it’s a top tier VPN service that’s worth every penny.

Private Internet Access is a great Mobile Legends VPN. They have a feature called “Squid” proxies which uses less encryption in order to improve speeds.

  • Pricing

    From

    $2.69 –
    $9.95

  • Available on

    • Windows
    • macOS
    • iOS
    • Android

  • Unblocks

    • Netflix
    • iPlayer
    • Amazon Prime
    • Hulu

Private Internet Access (PIA) offers one of the most reliable services available, and at a competitively low cost, too. Its worldwide network of servers delivers great speeds without sacrificing privacy, making it ideal for getting around slow servers. I tested it global server network to bypass geo-restrictions and found it to be fantastic for unblocking content and accessing Mobile Legends: Bang Bang servers in different countries. I also tested it with Netflix and it worked without issues, so this is definitely a good all-rounder.

One of the best things about PIA is its zero-logs policy, which means it collects no data about your usage or connection to its services (a claim it has proven in court!) I used it to gain privacy at home and on public Wi-Fi, and it was reliable and stable everywhere I went. With its deep focus on privacy, this VPN excels at beating restrictive networks – helping users to get the most out of gaming and online services in both school and work. Overall, PIA is a great low-cost option and I definitely recommend comparing it to our other recommendations yourself by using its 30-day money-back guarantee.

CyberGhost offers an outstanding VPN for Mobile Legends. They have an easy to use apps for iOS and Android, which great for anyone that is new to VPNs.

  • Pricing

    From

    $2.25 –
    $12.99

  • Available on

    • Windows
    • macOS
    • iOS
    • Android
    • Linux
  • Unblocks

    • Netflix
    • iPlayer
    • Amazon Prime
    • Hulu

CyberGhost is a fully featured VPN service that continues to impress us. Its strong encryption, good speeds, and wealth of features make it excellent for users looking for a VPN that will do more than just help them game better. Its built-in app protection allows you to automatically launch the VPN and connect to a specific server whenever you open named apps, saving you the trouble of switching servers whenever you want to play Mobile Legends: Bang Bang.

One feature that is currently lacking is obfuscation (stealth) technology, which would make it better for users in countries with mass surveillance and censorship (such as China). This does not mean that the VPN is not secure, however, as it allows you to run OpenVPN connection over TCP port 443 to cloak VPN traffic as regular HTTPS. All in all, CyberGhost delivers a premium service without the premium price tag.

VyprVPN have slick apps for iOS and Android users, making it a great choice for Mobile Legends players. They have a strong focus on gaming and located servers next to gaming servers.

  • Pricing

    From

    $2.50 –
    $12.95

  • Available on

    • Windows
    • macOS
    • iOS
    • Android
    • Linux
  • Unblocks

    • Netflix
    • iPlayer
    • Amazon Prime
    • Hulu

VyprVPN is an easy-to-use VPN that’s great for beginners who are looking for a service that they can put through its paces. With automatic reconnect and kill switch functions, users are protected if their server connection should fail at any time (but be aware that kill switch functions could end your game). On top of this, Vypr boasts an impressive proprietary obfuscation technology called Chameleon that claims to beat even deep packet inspection.

VyprVPN is the first to have published a full and independent audit of its zero logs service; an impressive display of privacy and a real confidence booster for users who worry about connection and usage logs. This deep-rooted drive for a truly open and unrestricted internet experience makes it fantastic for users in countries such as China, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, and Iran, where censorship and internet restrictions are commonplace. Vypr is an all-round secure service that users have come to rely on time and time again.

Ivacy have a strong reputation amongst gamers since they teamed up with esports club GamersOrigin. They offer fast servers, great security features, and it’s really cheap!

  • Pricing

    From

    $1.00 –
    $9.95

  • Available on

    • Windows
    • macOS
    • iOS
    • Android
    • Linux
  • Unblocks

    • Netflix
    • iPlayer
    • Amazon Prime
    • Hulu

Ivacy has been around for quite a while, only recently poking its head out to stand shoulder to shoulder with some of the top names in the industry. With astoundingly fast server speeds, it offers a simple platform with lots of options for both new and advanced users. Alongside this great service comes excellent 24/7 customer support (and a 30-day money-back guarantee, just in case).

Privacy purists will note that the Ivacy website uses a large amount of tracking (including Google Analytics), and an unfortunate lack of true obfuscation (stealth) technology. However, it does offer OpenVPN port selection in Windows and Android, and our testing discovered no IP leaks whatsoever when using any of Ivacy’s software. Overall, this is a pretty impressive service that we think will only continue to improve.

Why do I need a VPN for Mobile Legends?

Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) is a fast-paced multiplayer online battle arena game that has had its fair share of issues with server lag, hacking users, and imbalanced games. Using a VPN can help you level the playing field by connecting to faster servers, preventing DDoS attacks (that can cause lag and even disconnect you entirely), and by creating a secure tunnel around your internet traffic. As well as improving your overall gaming experience, a good VPN can help you:

Will a VPN cause lag when I play Mobile Legends?

While a VPN will always slow your internet traffic, this will usually only be a negligible amount (since we’re adding another step in the connection process). If you’re looking to get around server lag, then this will depend primarily on which servers you are accessing, both for the VPN and for Mobile Legends. Using a VPN server that is far away from you will have a slower connection speed than one that is close by, so picking one that is close will help minimize any drop in connection speed. Choosing a server with a fast connection is always recommended when gaming.

On top of this, the MLBB server you connect to may also slow you down (depending on what country it is in and how congested it is). Connecting to a server that is congested and full of users will cause your connection to slow down significantly – introducing lag and affecting your gameplay. Most notably, some Asian servers regularly become saturated with players and can make the game unplayable for some users. Players in India recently noted extremely slow connections and unfair combat as Indonesian players took advantage of congested servers, high ping, and a lack of ping abuse countermeasures within the game.

How to change your server region

You can check your server by tapping on your avatar icon in the top corner. This will show your server number (in brackets) after your account ID. If you want to change your in-game server region, then (from the home page) go to Contest and select Conquest of Dawn. From here, click on the globe icon in the top corner (this will show your current server region, as well as letting you select a new region).

Be aware that you can only change your server region once a week.

Will I get banned for using a VPN with Mobile Legends?

We reached out to Moonton (the developers behind the game) to ask whether players would receive repercussions for using a VPN while playing, and unfortunately, they didn’t answer our questions.

What we can say for certain is that the app detects and bans players who use third-party plugins for the app that provide an unfair advantage. Moonton increased detection and punishment in response to a rise in “map hacking”: where players install a plugin to show where enemy players are on a map and strategize around the enemy’s locations. Since a VPN is not a plugin for the app, but rather an independent app that creates a tunnel for your internet traffic, it shouldn’t give you any trouble.

If you’re still concerned about how a VPN might affect your use of the game, don’t worry – using a VPN that gears more towards privacy will help to keep your usage hidden through obfuscation (stealth) technology. The right VPN will not only help you get the most out of the game, but will also keep you safe and private while doing it by hiding your information and traffic.

Can I get a free VPN for Mobile Legends?

Using a free VPN can be a good way to save money, but when it comes to MLBB, we do not recommend using one for the following reasons:

  • Free VPNs are limited to a small number of servers which are regularly congested. This will slow down your overall speed, and may even cause more lag than simply not using a VPN at all.
  • With limited servers comes limited geolocations, meaning that getting a server for your country, or one nearby, might not be available (and connecting to a far-away country will slow your internet traffic).
  • Free VPN services often impose speed and data restrictions (which can limit your game and even cut you off halfway through a match).
  • Free VPN services will often make their profits through monitoring and selling users’ personal information and VPN usage.
  • Some free VPNs have been known to infect devices with malware. Using such a VPN may harm your device, and may also risk being flagged by the game, landing you with an unsuspecting ban.

If you want to get the best service, but can’t afford a top-shelf VPN, then don’t worry. There are some fantastic and cheap VPN services available that won’t sacrifice game speed or security.

How do I set up a VPN on my phone?

Installing through your app store

If possible, the simplest way to install a VPN onto your phone is to do so through the App Store/Google Play Store/Huawei App Gallery/etc:

  1. Subscribe to a VPN.
  2. Download and Install the app.
  3. Connect to your desired server.
  4. Keep the app running in the background and start playing.

Can’t find the VPN on your device’s app store? Don’t worry, there are two other methods that you can try.

Sideloading a VPN with the .config file

  1. Go to your chosen provider’s website and download the OpenVPN configuration files for your desired server(s)/geolocation(s), and unzip them on your device (or onto a computer and then transfer it to your device).
  2. Download and install the OpenVPN Connect app.
  3. Run the OpenVPN Connect app and add a profile by clicking the “+” symbol at the top of the page. Name it, and click “import“.
  4. Find the configuration files from step 1 and select a server (.ovpn file). Click on the tick icon to continue.
  5. Your server name should appear under the profiles tab. Click on the profile to connect to that server.

If you want to use multiple servers/geolocations, just repeat the process.

Extra security and protection

After installing your VPN, we recommend checking that IPv6 routing and IPv4 leak protection are enabled to prevent DNS leaks and redirect all IPv6 and IPv4 traffic over the VPN. This can be done in two easy steps:

  1. Click the pen icon to edit the relevant Profile.
  2. Check that IPv4 and IPv6 “use default route“.

Don’t forget to check your VPN for leaks

Sideloading a VPN with the .apk file

This method is better for players in countries with mass censorship and surveillance:

  1. From your device’s app store, download a file manager app such as ES File Manager (if you don’t already have one).
  2. Download the .apk files onto your device from the provider’s website (or download it onto a computer and transfer it across to your device).
  3. Open your file manager app, then find and install the .apk file.
  4. Open the app, log in, and configure your settings.

Troubleshooting

If your VPN isn’t working like it should, or you’re struggling to access websites or content, try:

  • Checking your VPN’s connection.
  • Using a different server or a different geolocation.
  • Reinstalling your VPN.
  • Checking your VPN account information is correct and up-to-date.
  • Checking your internet connection.
  • Contacting your VPN provider (they may have a solution at hand).

If your provider cannot resolve the issue, then we recommend considering a different provider. Making use of VPNs with money-back guarantees and trial periods can help you find the right service without wasting money.

Conclusion

To sum up, the right VPN can not only level the playing field by beating server lag and skipping congestion, but it can also unblock regional content, and protect your online activity. If you’re looking to get the most out of MLBB, then here’s a reminder of our top 5 VPNs for the job:

PIA on Windows

Private Internet Access is a US-based VPN with servers in 74 countries around the world. The VPN is both secure and reliable, meaning that it is great for unblocking more streams on your Apple TV. The VPN can be installed on either a macOS or a Windows computer, and you can easily connect your Apple TV to your computer to make use of the VPN with an ethernet cable. Alternatively, you could buy a Vilfo router to connect to the VPN at the router level.

During my tests, we enjoyed using this VPN because of its super-fast connection speeds. We found it able to stream geo-restricted services with ease, though it doesn’t work with iPlayer at the moment, unfortunately. It does, however, access a few different Netflix catalogs, which is splendid news if (like me) you have an account you want to make the most of. We also really appreciated this VPN’s live chat support, which you can turn to quickly to ask setup questions if you need to.

In addition to being great for streaming, PIA is ideal for torrenting because it has a kill switch to prevent you from accidentally leaking unencrypted data and port forwarding for getting the best possible speeds. Overall, we found PIA to be an excellent all-rounder, particularly considering the low price of a subscription. How to install and use a VPN with Apple TV?

Once you’ve decided which VPN is right for your Apple TV, you’ll need to set it up. There are a number of ways to do this, and some are more straightforward than others. Check out our how to set up an AppleTV VPN guide for the steps you need to take in order to do this.

What generation are you using?

As noted earlier in this guide, Apple TV is not designed to let you run VPN software directly on the device. However, since the 4thGeneration (2015 onwards), Apple TVs run the tvOS operating system – a stripped-down version of iOS that is able to run apps. Sadly, this does not include VPN apps, however. Luckily, there are a few simple solutions to this problem which we will explain in this guide.

The advantages of using a VPN for Apple TV?

A VPN is an online service that does two things:

  1. Uses strong encryption to provide digital privacy. If you’d like to learn more about staying safe and secure online, be sure to check out our ultimate privacy guide.
  2. Allows you to pretend to be in a different country to bypass local censorship and website blocks, as well as international geo-blocking. As a result, you’ll be able to access services that’d otherwise be blocked in your country. We take a closer look at this topic in our guide to geo-spoofing.

For example, a VPN for Apple TV can provide you with a British IP address so you can stream BBC iPlayer, which is free to watch for UK residents but is not available to overseas subscribers. If you want to know more, take a look at our what is a VPN? Beginner’s guide.

Using a VPN on Apple TV  to watch Netflix?

There are three different ways to access a foreign Netflix library on Apple TV. As it’s not possible for you to download a VPN directly onto Apple TV, you will need to follow the steps above to set up a VPN on Apple TV.

The router method is 100% effective, but it can get pretty time consuming to set up and expensive if you require a new router. The good news is that you can opt to share a VPN connection with your Apple TV. By connecting a PC or laptop to the VPN and then connecting your Apple TV to that computer, you can enjoy internet access that is routed via the VPN server.

Besides this relatively simple method, some premium VPN services provide access to Netflix using smart DNS settings. Smart DNS is simply a technology that enables you to spoof your geo-location and so it is fantastic for streaming. ExpressVPN, which provides its “MediaStreamer” smart DNS service as part of the VPN subscription, works excellently for streaming US Netflix. This allows you to access more Netflix from inside your Apple TV without the need to connect it to a PC or set up a VPN on your router at all! However, keep in mind that a smart DNS doesn’t provide any security benefits since the connection is not encrypted and your IP address is not hidden.

Which method you opt for is completely down to you. However, if you are after a quick solution, we recommend subscribing to ExpressVPN
and using its MediaStreamer smart DNS technology.

To find out what Netflix library is showing your favorite Netflix shows, check out our handy StreamCatcher tool. Simply search for the TV show or movie you want to watch and we’ll show you what countries’ Netflix catalog has it.

Can I use a free VPN  for Apple TV?

There are some reliable free VPNs on the market, unfortunately, because they restrict speeds and have data limits they just aren’t suitable for streaming. To stream content on Apple TV, you are going to need an unrestricted VPN that does not place download limits or connection speed limitations on you.

We understand that you may want to try a service out before purchasing one. In this case, you should take advantage of VPN providers’ free trials or money-back guarantees. These services do not place restrictions on you in any way and you get the full speeds you need to stream content in HD without risking your cash.

Why you need a fast VPN for Apple TV

You should expect a slight loss of speed when using a VPN for Apple TV. The further you are physically from the VPN server you connect to, the slower the service is likely to be. This is why we’d recommend connecting to a server that’s nearby – you’ll be able to stream without any buffering hiccups if you do! Fortunately, our recommended providers have fantastic server speeds, so the loss should be negligible.

If you intend to use a VPN for Apple TV, you will probably want to connect to a VPN server in another country – to spoof your location and access geo-restricted content. This typically involves long distances, which is why it is important to choose a fast VPN capable of delivering HD content without buffering issues.

We recommend that you always test a few different VPN servers. This way, you can find a server in the country you need that is not overloaded, and that is located as close to you as possible. For example, if you need a server in the US – be sure to pick either the East or West coast depending on where you live.

Unblock Apple Music

If Apple Music isn’t available in your location or if you’re looking to unblock content on there that is blocked in your region then a VPN can help. Check out our Apple Music VPN page for more details about how this can help.

Is it illegal to use a VPN with Apple TV?

It is not against the law to use a VPN with an Apple TV. Copyright holders would prefer that you not use your VPN on Apple TV to bypass content restrictions that have been purposefully imposed. However, there’s little they can do about this other than requiring platforms like Netflix to block as many VPNs as possible.

No streaming service we know of has ever banned an individual user for bypassing geo-blocks. This is because they would lose that user’s subscription fee, which would be counterproductive.

Is the iPhone battery virus a scam?

A pop-up appears, warning you that your iPhone battery has been infected with a virus. You react without thinking, tapping on a button to remove it — and just like that, you’ve fallen for the scam. Read on to find out how the so-called iPhone battery virus really works. What is…

What is a battery virus?

The first thing we should make clear is that this “battery virus” is not a real thing. Viruses and other malware attack software, not hardware.

The battery is just a part of your device that powers your phone – there’s no software for a virus to corrupt. Any pop-ups stating that “your battery is badly damaged by virus” are just phishing scams meant to scare you into acting illogically.

What happens when you click the link? You might be redirected to a page where your phone can be infected with malware. Perhaps you’ll be sent to a form and told to sign up for free antivirus software. Either way, it’s a scam, designed to steal your information and spread malicious software.

Can a virus drain your battery?

Yes, if you happen to get a real piece of malware on your device, it is likely to drain your battery – sometimes significantly. Battery drain is one of the main symptoms of a device infected with spyware. The malware collects and sends out information about you as you’re using the device –the processing power takes its toll on the battery.

How to tell if you have malware on your iPhone

If your battery drains exceptionally quickly, first try letting it discharge completely until the device shuts down, then charge your iPhone fully. This way, you will calibrate the battery meter and be able to check your actual battery health in the settings.

If your battery health is poor (70 % and below), it’s not surprising that your iPhone loses power quickly. At this point, you can either get used to charging your battery more often or try getting a new battery installed.

However, good battery health on a fast-draining phone is a red flag, and you should investigate further.

How to tell if you have a virus that drains your phone’s battery?

First of all – do you have a jailbroken device? Have you even downloaded apps from third-party app stores? If you did, it’s likely that one of them came with an unpleasant add-on. iPhones rarely get infected with viruses or other malware, but it’s not impossible.

Without strict regulations of the App Store, there’s no way to tell which apps are safe to use, so you can easily end up with malware or adware on your device. But don’t worry – here’s a tutorial on how to remove adware from your iPhone.

How to avoid malware

  • Know what signs to look for. Any strange behavior or sudden changes in how your device works could be a sign of malware and is worth investigating. To find out what warning signs to look out for, read our blog post here.
  • Beware of phishing. Know what phishing is and how it works, so the next time you see iPhone battery virus warnings, you’ll know it’s a scam.
  • Be careful with software. Only download apps from the App store – if you get them anywhere else, there’s no way of knowing what will end up installed on your phone.
  • Use a VPN at all times. Installing NordVPN on your iPhone will protect you from ending up on malicious sites in the first place.

Online security starts with a click.

Facebook data breach puts 500 million users at risk

Facebook is back in the news, for all the wrong reasons. From Cambridge Analytica to the WhatsApp privacy policy debacle, the social media giant has gained a reputation for mishandling data. Now a new scandal has shaken the company; the personal information of more than 500 million users has been leaked….

What do we know about the leak?

The breached data came from a security vulnerability that Facebook patched in 2019. It includes names, phone numbers, Facebook IDs, emails, relationship statuses, locations, and other information on 533 million users from 106 countries. This data was found on a hacking forum, free to download.

Egypt (44.8 million users), Tunisia (39.5), Italy (35.7), and the US (32.3) were among the most affected countries.

A Facebook spokesperson called the data “old” and pointed out that the actual amount of leaked records might be much lower, as there are many duplicate accounts. However, this is not a good argument. People don’t change their phone numbers every year and this could put millions of users at risk.

The involvement of Telegram bots

Attentive readers might remember that a couple of months ago we wrote another article on a Facebook breach. Are these stories related?

Yes — in fact, we’re talking about the same issue. In January, the news began to spread that hackers were selling Facebook users’ info, using a Telegram bot. The bot allowed people to match Facebook IDs with phone numbers, and vice versa.

At that point, cybercriminals were still selling this service, so why is the data now freely available? Well, it may be because the Telegram operation stopped being profitable over time, but some cybersecurity researchers believe that releasing data like this is a way for hackers to gain credibility in their community.

How to check if your data was leaked

You don’t need to wonder across hacking forums to find out whether your personal information was leaked. Head to the Have I Been Pwned website, operated by cybersecurity expert Troy Hunt, and find out if you’ve been compromised.

All you need to do is input your phone number or email address, and the website will immediately show if your details were exposed in any verified data breach.

What can somebody do with your personal information?

Knowing your phone number, email address, and Facebook ID is enough to set up various cyber attacks and scams:

  • Smishing. Hackers can send you text messages with malicious links, infect your device with malware, and steal your credit card information.
  • Phishing. Similar to smishing, phishing involves fake emails designed to look like they came from a reputable organization, like a bank or government agency.
  • Identity theft. Criminals can impersonate you and trick your friends or co-workers into “loaning” them money. They can also contact various service providers pretending to be you and try to exploit them.
  • Vishing. If you have received a suspicious call from your tax agency or internet provider, asking you to reveal your sensitive information, it might be a vishing attempt. Perpetrators can also pretend to be someone you know and try to manipulate you into giving away passwords and other details.

What can you do to stay safe?

If you’ve discovered that your personal details were exposed on Facebook leak, there are a couple of things that you need to be aware of, and steps you can take to protect yourself:

  1. Expect attention from criminals. From now on take every call, SMS, or email with a healthy dose of scepticism. If something smells fishy, don’t take any risks: ignore the caller and their requests. We all receive enquiries from legitimate institutions, but they never ask us to reveal our credit card details or other highly sensitive information.
  2. Change your passwords. Even though passwords were not exposed in this leak, it’s not the bad idea to change them. This applies not only to your Facebook account, but also to other services where you might have used the same email address for registration. Use a password manager like NordPass to create strong passwords and store them securely.
  3. Enable two-factor authentication. This won’t be the last time Facebook has found itself in the middle of a leak. With two-factor authentication, you need to authenticate yourself via an SMS, token, or app after typing your password. This improves your security and mitigates the risk of having your account stolen one day.
  4. Don’t overshare on Facebook. Bios, relationship statuses, and even occupations ended up on the leaked database. While you might think this information is worthless, it can be used to launch a social engineering attack. Look through the eyes of a criminal and remove any sensitive information that can get you in trouble.

Hacktivism: a social cause or a cybercrime?

It’s easy to imagine that every hacker is a criminal intent on financial gain, but that’s not always the case. Some hackers are motivated by a desire to promote social justice, combat corruption, and champion ethical causes. They’re called hacktivists, and the recent case against a young Swiss hacker has put…

What is hacktivism?

Hacktivism involves the use of hacking or related techniques to promote a political and social agenda. Common hacktivist causes include human rights, the freedom of information, and issues around free speech.

These hackers will usually attack governments and corporations, with the goal often being to raise public awareness of an issue, or simply to disrupt the target’s activities. Hacktivist tactics include leaking private information, launching DDoS attacks, and defacing websites with political messages.

Hacktivists will claim that they’re working for the greater good, but in the eyes of the law that’s not always a convincing defence. Hacktivism itself sometimes lies on the border of cybercrime, as recent events in Switzerland have shown.

What happened in Switzerland?

The case of Till Kottmann shows that being a hacktivist is still a risky business. This 21-year-old Swiss hacker was recently indicted for conspiracy, wire fraud, and aggravated identity theft. They allegedly accessed files from Nissan Motor Co, Intel Corp, and Verkada, a security-camera provider. The hacker also shared some of this data online.

Apparently, Kottmann discovered a Verkada admin’s username and password in an unencrypted subdomain. The hacktivist claims that the hack was an easy job and just involved logging into a web UI with a high-privileged user account.

Kottmann explained that the leaked footage obtained from the security-camera provider illustrates the scope and danger of mass surveillance. They claim to have acted as a hacktivist, rather than a cybercriminal. However, authorities insist that such leaks increase the vulnerabilities of corporations and consumers.

Hacktivism and the law

Hacktivists have always had a very strained relationship with the law. Very often legal institutions ignore the hacktivists’ ideological agenda and see their activities as simply criminal acts. This is especially evident in cases where attacks have been made against the state.

One of the most popular pro-hacktivist arguments claims that digital protest movements should be treated as similar to physical ones. According to academics at George Washington University, hacktivism could be protected in the US by the First Amendment, which covers freedom of speech, freedom of the press, the right to assembly, and the right to petition government.

They also argue that current cyber laws are not effective in dealing with these forms of protest. Countering the argument that heavy legal penalties are a necessary deterrent, the researchers also pointed out that most forms of hacktivism can be prevented if governments and corporations implement proper security practices.

The Computer Fraud and Abuse Act

Despite the ethical arguments in favor of hacktivism, the legal response can be unforgiving. In the US, the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act drives most hacktivism cases, allowing for both criminal and civil lawsuits.

This legislation has some particularly contentious features. According to cybersecurity researcher Doctor Molly Sauter, the more people who are impacted by a hacker’s actions the harsher their punishment. If a service with thousands of users is hacked, a prosecution can argue for unreasonably harsh sentencing, based on the number of people impacted.

The judicial system still lacks nuance when it comes to dealing with hacktivism and, even with the best intentions, hacktivism remains a high-risk activity.

Hacktivists VS. the law

Every hacktivism case is unique, and they don’t always result in a conviction. Here are just a few of the many notable examples to illustrate the varied motivations and legal outcomes involved.

The Anonymous PayPal attack

In 2011, 14 people from the hacktivist group Anonymous were arrested for a DDOS attack on the PayPal website. The attack was part of an operation that intended to expose “corporate interests controlling the internet and silencing the people’s rights to spread information”. The defendants avoided jail time.

Aaron Schwartz and the JSTOR

Famous hacktivist Aaron Schwartz was convicted after initiating hundreds of PDF download requests per minute from the JSTOR digital library. He faced what many believed to be disproportionately harsh sentences, including 35 years in prison, and tragically committed suicide. While the inciting incident is not really classed as an act of hacktivism, it’s an example of the heavy and often inappropriate legal response to transgressive hacking.

The Jeremy Hammond case

Jeremy Hammond is another notable hacker, who was imprisoned due to his political activities. Hammond hacked the website of the Protest Warrior, the pro-war right-wing group. He accessed members’ credit card numbers, which he intended to use to donate to left-wing groups. He was eventually sentenced and spent two years in jail.

The debate rages on

As these incidents show, the issue is not black-and-white, and it raises many uncomfortable questions. Is hacktivism a justifiable method of promoting social causes or just another form of cybercrime? The governments and businesses targeted will almost always say it’s a crime, but many will still claim that the ends justify the means.

As hacking becomes an ever more powerful tool for social justice movements around the world, the debate looks set to continue.

What is two-factor authentication and how to enable it?

If you think a password is enough to protect your account, think again. In the age of cybercrime and high-tech hackers, you need something more sophisticated. You need two-factor authentication (2FA). Contents What is two-factor authentication? How is 2FA different from 2SV? How to enable 2FA 2FA on macOS and iOS…

It’s one of the best ways to keep your accounts safe from cybercriminals. Now available across numerous services — including Apple’s operating systems, Google Drive, Windows 10, and popular social networks — 2FA is a simple and effective security solution.

What is two-factor authentication?

The process adds an extra security layer to your account, making it much harder for malicious actors to attack and steal your data. To access a profile protected with 2FA, you need two elements:

  • Something you know (a password or pin code)
  • Something you have (access to a specific device)

With 2FA, every time you want to log in to your account, you will first be asked to enter your password. Then, a one-time code will automatically be sent to your mobile phone; if you can prove that you’re also the device owner, you can log in.

Even if a cybercriminal acquires your password and tries to break into your account, they will need to have physical access to your phone as well.

How is 2FA different from 2SV?

If you already have two-step verification (2SV), is two-factor authentication necessary? The answer is yes.

Although 2SV also offers some additional layers of protection, it doesn’t necessarily require the “something you have” part. In order to access your account when 2SV is on, you can use either two USB security keys, two passwords, or a combination of a password and a security question.

The main difference between these two is pretty simple:

  • If you use 2FA, the bad actor who wants to hack your account will have to pull off two types of theft: they will need to steal your physical device (“something you have”) and your password (“something you know”).
  • If you rely on 2SV, the hacker will only need to commit one type of crime, multiple times. He just needs to steal your information — your password and the answer to your security question, for example. If he’s using spyware or extorting a data breach, he may already have both.

Although both of these security measures add an additional level of safety to your account and should be used wherever possible, 2FA offers more benefits. Needless to say – any form of protection is better than none.

How to enable 2FA

2FA on macOS and iOS

macOS 2FA

If you’re setting up 2FA on macOS, head to System Preferences in the Apple menu and select Apple ID. Go to Password & Security and click Turn On Two-Factor Authentication.

If you’re using macOS Mojave or an older operating system, you should go to System Preferences and click iCloud. Next, select Account Details, Security, and Turn On Two-Factor Authentication.

If you’re using an iPhone, iPad, or iPod, you should first go to Settings, and Password & Security. Alternatively, if you’re using an earlier version of the operating system — iOS 10.2 or older — head to Settings, iCloud, and Apple ID, and click Turn On Two-Factor Authentication.

Next, enter the number of the phone you want to use as your verifying device. Apple will then send you a code by text or call, depending on your preferences. Verify your number to complete the setup process for two-factor authentication.

2FA on Google

Google 2FA

Confusingly, Google uses the term “2-Step Verification” when referring to their 2FA features, so in this case you’ll be setting up 2SV. Go to Sign-in and security. Enter your password and phone number to receive your verification code.

You can either stay with the default option and receive your security codes via text or voice messages, get the Google prompt to make your verifications quicker or use their Authenticator app.

With the Google prompt, you won’t need to type in verification codes each time you want to access your account. Instead, you will receive a notification asking if it’s really you trying to log in. Simply tap “Yes” and you’re in.

2FA on Windows 10

Windows 10 2FA

If you’re a Windows 10 user, the process for setting up 2FA is a simple one, and can be carried out online through your Microsoft account. As part of the authentication process, you can use an email, a phone number, or Microsoft’s dedicated Authenticator app.

Head to Microsoft’s Security Basics page and log into your Microsoft account. Then click More security options and Set up two-step verification, and follow the prompts to complete the set-up process.

Here’s why you shouldn’t use texts for 2FA

The major problem with two-factor authentication is that it typically relies on text messages, which apparently can be easily hijacked. Although such vulnerability of text messages has been known and discussed for a long time, security experts at Positive Technologies have recently shown what it actually looks like.

The video below (first published by Forbes) demonstrates how researchers managed to intercept text messages and use 2FA to get access to a user’s Gmail account. From there it took them a few moments to reset the password from Coinbase and take control of a bitcoin wallet. Apparently, your name, surname and phone number is all hackers need to break two-factor security if you use to claim your identity via SMS.

play

While you may blame Coinbase for not putting enough effort to secure their services, the actual weakness lies in the phone system itself. Using their own research tool, researchers were able to exploit known flaws in the Signaling System No. 7 (SS7) that is used by nearly every telecom in the world to manage calls and text messages. “This is a vulnerability in mobile networks, which ultimately means it is an issue for everyone, especially services relying on the mobile network to send security codes,” said Dmitry Kurbatov who is a researcher at Positive Technologies.

While telecom companies are restricted from accessing users’ communications traveling through this network, hijacking services are pretty popular on criminal marketplaces. However, there’s no need for hackers to spend money on hijacking services as they can breach the network directly: “It’s much easier and cheaper to get direct access to the SS7 interconnection network and then craft specific SS7 messages, instead of trying to find a ready-to-use SS7 hijack service.”

As you can see, it’s pretty easy for cyber-criminals to attack the phone network and intercept your communications. If a hacker manages to breach the network, they can use 2FA codes sent to you via text messages and log in to any account he needs. According to Dmitry Kurbatov, “this hack would work for any resource – real currency or virtual currency – that uses SMS for password recovery.”

If not SMS, then what?

Even hijackable, text-based 2FA is better than no digital protection. However, if you care about your data security, you may want to consider choosing an alternative authentication method, such as Google’s Authenticator app.

Experts also suggest getting a separate phone number for digital services through, for example, Google Voice. For secure 2FA, you can also use security keys or download the Google Prompt that doesn’t rely on the vulnerable SMS protocol.

Another important step privacy-concerned users should take is to demand that all account services provide non-SMS-based 2FA options to help their customers securely log in to their accounts without the fear of being hacked.

Take security to the next level

Now might be a good time to go through all your accounts (Amazon, Dropbox, Facebook, PayPal, etc) and add that extra layer of security.

The majority of popular services provide either two 2FA or 2SV to their customers and there are also a number of specialized apps, such as Authy or Duo Mobile, designed for the same purpose. If you’re not sure whether a specific website offers 2FA or 2SV, you can quickly check it here.

If you want to take your security to the next level, you can also use a virtual private network (VPN) to enhance online safety. NordVPN wraps your data in layers of next-generation encryption, making it harder for criminals to access your passwords and sensitive data. Take control of your data today with 2FA and NordVPN.

How to watch the Euro 2021

Euro 2020 (or is Euro 2021) is finally here, and millions of football fans will be tuning in not just in Europe, but all over the world.  The tournament is being aired exclusively on pay-TV services in a lot of non-European countries like Australia and the USA. In many European…

Euro 2020 (or is Euro 2021) is finally here, and millions of football fans will be tuning in not just in Europe, but all over the world.

The tournament is being aired exclusively on pay-TV services in a lot of non-European countries like Australia and the USA. In many European nations, however, you can watch the whole tournament on free-to-air TV.

If you’re a football supporter from Europe now living somewhere else – or you’re just a passionate fan of the sport who loves the Euros – this can be really frustrating. But with a VPN, you’ll be able to access a high-definition European stream in English, French, Spanish, or Portuguese that is completely free to air.

How to watch Euro 2021 football

A VPN is a must-have piece of kit if you want to access a high-quality, free Euro 2021 stream. VPN services spoof your location so you appear to be somewhere else, allowing you to access geo-restricted service based in another country that is showing Euro 2021 for free. This same method should work for all the streaming services we list in this article!

Let’s say you live in the UAE, but you don’t want to pay for a beIN Sports subscription and, if possible, you’d prefer a stream with English commentary because English is your first language. With a VPN like ExpressVPN , it doesn’t really matter where you are in the world – you’ll be able to connect to the ITV and The BBC. Simply follow the steps below to watch Euro 2021 football from anywhere.

  1. Sign up for an ExpressVPN account.
  2. Download the software and install it on your device.
  3. Connect to one of ExpressVPN’s servers in the United Kingdom.
  4. Create an account on the BBC’s website using your email address.
  5. Navigate to the ITV or The BBC’s live TV page.
  6. Start streaming the Euros in high definition!

As you can see from the image below, ExpressVPN has servers in several locations in the UK – similar to its coverage in other European countries. They also offer a 30-day no-questions asked money-back guarantee.

ExpressVPN server locations

You don’t need to sign up to check its server locations, so head over to the website to double-check they have servers where you need them. They’ve even got one in Wembley if you want to keep with the footballing theme!

The best ways to stream Euro 2021

Below is a list of the best streams to watch Euro 2020 on. Using a VPN will allow you to unblock these channels from anywhere in the world and ExpressVPN has high-speed servers in all of these countries so you can stream all the action in HD. All of these channels are legal, High Definition, and completely free-to-air.

Remember, if you live outside of the countries these channels are based in, you will need a VPN to access them. otherwise, you will be blocked from entering.

How do VPNs unblock Euro 2021 Football?

VPNs send all your internet traffic down an encrypted tunnel and through a private server, allowing you to safely spoof your location and pretend to be in the country where that server is located.

ExpressVPN is a state of the art VPN provider with over 3,000 servers worldwide, including loads in England, France, Spain, and Portugal, where the Euros is being shown on free-to-air TV. This means you can connect through one of their servers in the country and simply access the channels available there.

Out of all the VPNs on the market, ExpressVPN is known for its ability to consistently unblock top streaming services like the BBC and ITV, which are showing all the games between them in the UK.

All of the streams we’re about to provide you with information are high-quality, so your next consideration will likely be commentary language.

All footballing nations have famous commentators who are masters of their craft – and when you have to watch a stream in the wrong language – or with the wrong commentators – it’s never really the same experience, and you realize how much they add to the football viewing experience. If you’re one of the 360,000 British people who live in Spain, for example – where you can watch Euro 2020 on free-to-air TV – you might still prefer the good old BBC commentary team.

Regions with no real free-to-air options

In Europe, there’s always massive pressure on the Euros to be free to air, which is why even pay-tv channels like Sport TV Portugal sub-license their rights to channels like TVI.

But in many countries outside of Europe the rights to show the games are held exclusively by pay-TV/cable channels. This means you’ll have to pay a hefty subscription fee to watch it.

Why you should Avoid Illegal streaming sites for Euro 2021

Since the rise of pay-tv subscription platforms, it’s an unfortunate reality that an increasing number of sports fans have been turning to illegal streaming sites to watch football. However, here at ProPrivacy we strongly recommend you avoid illegal streaming sites for a number of reasons.

Last year, The Industry Trust found that 29% of people who stream movies and sport on illegal websites saw their devices infected with malware. Illegal sites that take subscription payments are also hotbeds for fraudulent activity. Aside from the threat of malware, other problems with illegal streaming include:

    • Delays, latency, and buffering
    • All-round poor picture quality, often blurry
    • ‘Zoomed in’ streams where the scoreboard/minutes aren’t visible
    • Streams suddenly dropping during matches
    • Irritating ad overlays and pop-ups
    • Limited choice of commentary language

Case study: Mobdro

Mobdro, described in the media as ‘the world’s largest illegal streaming platform’ was an app that allowed users to illegally stream Premier League and La Liga games. Over 43 million people downloaded it before it was shut down this year.

Shortly beforehand, a researcher at the Digital Citizen’s Alliance – who were looking into the app – found that it directly downloaded malware onto the device they were using to investigate it.

Yes! Although it might be against the terms of service of some of these sites a) VPNs are not illegal to use and b) you’re going to be using one to access a stream provided by a broadcaster who has legally obtained the rights to show Euro 2021.

This means you can watch Euro 2021 with a VPN without worrying. Yes, there are some examples of websites blocking IP addresses known to be associated with VPN providers, but most premium services, like ExpressVPN, don’t have this problem and can be used efficiently to access the sites in question from wherever you are in the world.

Watch Euro 2021 online for free thanks to the 30-day money-back guarantee

Euro 2021 runs from June 11 to July 11 – which is exactly 30 days long. This is extremely convenient, as basically all premium, paid-for VPN services (including ExpressVPN) offer a 30-day money-back guarantee.

This means you can download your VPN software, install it, use it for 30-days, and then claim your refund back – essentially mean you can watch the entirety of Euro 2021 online for free, only incurring a temporary cost which will be reimbursed back to you once the tournament ends.

The reason so many VPNs offer this admirable condition on their service is that most people find VPNs really useful after using them. Even the most expensive services are worth the money. Think how many people pay for one, single regional Netflix library. it’s double, or even triple the monthly price of most VPN services. But with a VPN, you can access hundreds of Netflix libraries from around the world, by simply connecting to different servers across the globe.

The groups

  • Group A: Italy, Switzerland, Turkey, Wales
  • Group B: Belgium, Russia, Denmark, Finland
  • Group C: Ukraine, Netherlands, Austria, North Macedonia
  • Group D: England, Croatia, Czech Republic, Scotland
  • Group E: Spain, Poland, Sweden, Slovakia
  • Group F: Germany, France, Portugal, Hungary

Who will win Euro 2021?

England, France, and Belgium seem to be consistently ahead of the rest of the pack in most people’s estimations, with some bookies giving the trio around a 5/1 chance of winning each.

France are, of course, World Champions, and any team spearheaded by a player as dangerous as Kylian Mbappe will feel they have a strong chance of walking away victorious in an international tournament. Since September 2020, they have beaten Euro 2020 attendees Croatia (twice), Ukraine, Sweden, and Portugal, although their home defeat to Finland in November showed they’re still human.

Belgium, in many ways, are still yet to realize their potential as a force in international football, but fortunes could change in the summer for perhaps the best side the country has ever produced. Like England, they reached the semi-finals at the 2018 World Cup, losing to eventual winners France, and will be eager to go one further on the European stage. Lining up against Kevin De Bruyne, Romelu Lukaku, and Eden Hazard – despite the latter’s poor form in the Spanish capital – will make even the most experienced defenders feel uneasy.

Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, Italy, and Portugal, the latter of which ran away as surprise winners in 2016, are all being given decent odds at the moment, although this could of course change.

Who are the dark horses?

It’s the Euros, so anything can happen – just ask any member of the England squad that crashed out to Iceland in 2016 or the Portuguese team that lost to Greece in 2004. Ones to watch this time round include Sweden, who have Zlatan Ibrahimovic returning to international football after reversing his decision to retire.

Turning forty this year, the former PSG and Barcelona man is still ripping it up in the Serie A with AC Milan, with only Juventus forward and four-time Ballon D’or winner Cristiano Ronaldo posting a goals-to-game ratio comparable to the rampant Scandinavian striker. Ronaldo’s clubmate Dejan Kuluveski is perhaps the most exciting midfield talent Sweden has produced for several years and will be keen to impress too. They’re in Group E, and considering Spain’s less-than-convincing qualifier performances as of late, there’s every chance of an upset.

Another country that will look to a talismanic striker for moments of inspiration is Poland. Much of the country’s hopes for tournament success rest on whether Robert Lewandowski can be equally as deadly in the box for his nation as he is week in week out whilst playing for Bayern Munich. Poland reached the quarter-finals in 2016, so a semi-final appearance, for instance, is not at all far-fetched.

Denmark may fancy their chances this time around, despite being left out of the general conversation about who’s likely to emerge victorious in July. Their unusually star-studded 23-man squad is likely to include players from Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea, Leicester City, Tottenham Hostpur, Atalanta, Inter, and AC Milan. Few teams at the tournament will be able to field Starting XI’s with such elite club-level representation.

It’s hard to ignore the threat that is likely to be posed by Croatia, fresh off the back of their 2018 run to the World Cup final. Their team – which includes Real Mardi’s Luka Modric and Inter Milan’s Ivan Perisic, maybe the only thing standing in the way of England finishing top of Group D.

Euro 2021: talking points

An unusual set-up

The big story of Euro 2020, of course, is that it isn’t being played in 2020 at all. The tournament was postponed for a year due to the Coronavirus pandemic and, in another tournament first, will be played at various locations across Europe, from Azerbaijan to Spain.

How this extra traveling affects team performance is something worth keeping an eye on, as will the fact that many teams will be playing Euro 2021 fixtures in the country of their birth. Spain, Germany, England, Hungary, Scotland, The Netherlands, Italy, Denmark, and Russia will all be playing at least one group stage game on home turf.

Ireland – who haven’t qualified for the tournament – were scheduled to host several games in Dublin, but they have recently been reallocated over Covid concerns. This may be an omen for what’s to come; if there are more spikes across Europe during the tournament, games may have to be switched last minute.

Ronaldo’s last hurrah?

Euro 2020 perhaps marks the last European Championships that will see Cristiano Ronaldo grace the pitch. The Portuguese striker has been a permanent fixture of the tournament since 2004 and was one of the key players in 2016 when Portugal emerged victorious after a surprise Eder strike in the final four years ago.

He’ll be in his late thirties by the time Euro 2024 rolls around and for the first time in two decades, it will be an open question as to whether he makes the squad. Portugal is in the nominal ‘group of death’ for this tournament and will have to face both Germany and the 2018 World Cup winners France in the group stage, and will need strong performances to give themselves any chance of progressing into the knockout rounds.

Ronaldo is currently the joint top scorer in tournament history, tied on 9 with Michel Platini (who, quite incredibly, notched up his entire tally in a single tournament). One more would make him the first player to reach double figures in the tournament’s history – and what a way that would be to bow out!

Southgate’s player puzzle

For the first time in a long while, England fans seem to rate their team’s chances of reaching the latter stages of a European Championship, with boss Gareth Southgate still mulling over selection decisions with few names, especially in attacking positions, firmly locked in.

The explosive nature of Jack Grealish’s performances this season for Aston Villa and the seemingly unstoppable rise of Manchester City’s Phil Foden, who powered his team into the Champions League semi-finals recently, will likely see them take center stage as key members of the Starting XI. Chuck Jesse Lingard into the equation – who’s been in the form of his life since going on loan to shock Champions league chasers West Ham in January – you’ve got yourself what pundits commonly refer to as a ‘selection headache’. Chelsea’s Mason Mount, who has been a firm Southgate favorite for the last year or so, will also expect to have a say.

It’s not the worst type of selection headache for Southgate to have. But in somewhat of a first for an England manager of the modern era, he’s having to compare the form of multiple players playing in different leagues across Europe. Kieran Trippier – the only England player to score in a world cup semi-final for two generations – has enjoyed a stellar season at Atletico Madrid, whilst the rise of 17-year-old Jude Bellingham, who joined his compatriot Foden on the score sheet in the Champions League in City’s game against Bundesliga powerhouse Borussia Dortmund, is hard to ignore. The same goes for his clubmate Jadon Sancho, who is only 21 yet will surely be vying for a starting spot off the back of another strong season for the German outfit.

The Defence is a different story. The fate of players like Liverpool full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold – whose talent is unquestionable, but form of late has raised a few concerned eyebrows – is far from certain, especially when experienced players like Kyle Walker are available. The fitness of first-choice centre-half Harry Maguire – so essential to the side that there will be question marks around whether England will even play a back four if he’s gets injured – will likely be crucial to their progression.

Everton’s Jordan Pickford, whose goalkeeping heroics were a key feature of England’s World up Semi-final run in 2018, is expected to retain his place as no.1. despite an underwhelming season that has seen Dean Henderson emerge as Manchester United’s first-choice keeper and Nick Pope continue to produce good performances between the sticks for Burnley. Analysis by The Athletic shows that Pope has the second-best goal prevention rate out of any goalkeeper in the Premier League during 2020 – with Dean Henderson following shortly behind in third – whilst Pickford languishes in the bottom five.

The rise and rise of North Macedonia

North Macedonia are widely considered to be this year’s minnows, and for good reason too. They have a significantly smaller population than all the other qualifying teams (save for Wales, whose position as part of the United Kingdom with regard to football infrastructure and player pools gives lets them punch above their weight for obvious reasons). Finland and Slovakia – the third and fourth smallest nations competing – have over twice the population of the Southern European state.

Werner misses sitter in shock defeat! | Germany 1-2 North Macedonia | World Cup Qualifier Highlights Werner misses sitter in shock defeat! | Germany 1-2 North Macedonia | World Cup Qualifier Highlights

North Macedonia has only officially been a FIFA-affiliated team since 1994, chalking up a surprising number of points in qualifying since then. Yet arguably the team’s biggest achievement is their barnstorming 2-1 victory against Germany recently, made all the more special considering the fact it’s the first time the Germans have lost a qualifying game since England beat them 5-1 all the way back in 2001. They may prove a surprisingly tricky opponent and, all things considered, are in one of the easier groups. Watch this space!

When it comes to de-Googling, quitting YouTube is often one of the biggest hurdles. Streaming user-generated content on YouTube has become an everyday pastime for most people, and the idea of quitting the platform is hard to accept – even if it is highly beneficial to your privacy.

What you stream on YouTube provides Google with a huge amount of personal information. It allows the company to learn about your hobbies, the products you are interested in buying, the places you wish to visit, the celebrities and influencers you follow, the books you intend to read, and the news that interests you.

We can’t think of another service that captures such a precise and detailed snapshot of its users. With this in mind, it is vital to prevent this tracking if you want to improve your online privacy. So, what’s the answer?

The good news is that there are methods for streaming YouTube privately and anonymously. As a result, you can watch the content you are interested in without letting Google know everything about you.

How can I watch YouTube without Google?

To use YouTube privately, you must give up your personal account on the platform. Continuing to use your existing account whilst logged in will allow Google to know exactly what you are watching.

This is true even if you use the incognito feature, because it only stops your history accumulating in your account – not from being tracked and analyzed by Google.

The good news is that the services mentioned in this guide will allow you to import your subscriptions and enjoy them without Google knowing. As a result, you can still watch content from all of your favorite creators.

What’s more, these apps and services for watching YouTube privately actually have some features that you don’t get on YouTube. You’ll probably prefer your YouTube experience after you quit the official website and apps, in fact!

How to watch YouTube anonymously?

There are three popular services available on the market that allow people to stream video content on YouTube without tracking. Those apps are:

Each of those apps offers a similar experience, and they are all great for gaining privacy while streaming on YouTube. However, to help you decide between them, we will take a closer look at each service below.

NewPipe

NewPipe is an open-source Android app for using YouTube without being tracked by Google. It is an excellent way to stream videos from YouTube without ads and without accepting the questionable app permissions from Google’s official app.

Is NewPipe safe?

NewPipe’s code is published on GitHub, which means that anybody can verify and audit the code to ensure it is safe. The open-source nature of the app is a big thumbs up in terms of security and transparency.

That said, it is still possible that the NewPipe app could contain a vulnerability that has yet to be discovered. However, for the time being, nothing troubling has been found, and the app is considered completely safe.

NewPipe has many fans on Reddit, and it has received tons of praise from prominent tech bloggers because of its ability to allow users to stream YouTube privately.

However, it is worth noting that NewPipe still communicates with Google’s servers directly to access videos, so Google will still be able to track your IP address. For this reason, you will need to use a VPN if you want to gain complete privacy while using NewPipe.

Overall, NewPipe is an excellent player that lets you search YouTube with added privacy and does not harvest any data from you. You can download it either from the official NewPipe website or from F-Droid.

For those who want optimal security, it is possible to add Team NewPipe’s F-Droid repository to the app to ensure you get updates as quickly as possible!

Is NewPipe available on Google Play?

No. NewPipe is currently only available via the official NewPipe website, which means that you will need to change your phone’s settings to enable installing from unknown sources.

We recommend that if you decide to install NewPipe, you change your Android settings back after. This will ensure that you do not install any other untrusted apps in the future.

We understand that it has probably been drilled into you never to install apps from outside of the official app store, and it is true that this is the best course of action most of the time. However, NewPipe is an open-source app that is trusted, and as long as you only source it from the official website, you will be fine.

That said, it is vital that you only install NewPipe from the official website. If you download the APK from a random website – or a cloned version of the NewPipe website – you could wind up with a very nasty malware infection.

To ensure that you are safe, be sure to check the URL closely to check that you are on the real NewPipe website before you download the app.

According to Reddit users, there are fake NewPipe websites around, and there are fake versions of the app circulating in the wild – so you must download the app only from NewPipe or F-Droid.

Invidious

Invidious is an open-source alternative front end for YouTube. It is a great option for anybody who wants to watch YouTube videos anonymously.

It is an entirely web-based solution that permits you to stream videos on YouTube without Google tracking you. And it gives you a completely ad-free YouTube experience.

The website functions by proxying your connection to YouTube’s servers. As a result, YouTube and Google are unable to track you when you watch their videos.

You can even save subscriptions without needing to create a Google account! It also includes support for Reddit comments in place of YouTube comments, in case you still want that social fix.

Is Invidious safe?

Yes. The official Invidious website is considered completely safe, and it has a great reputation with users.

The website has no trackers, and it uses a randomly generated token to provide an RSS feed of your YouTube subscriptions. This ensures that you can follow your subscriptions without generating a paper trail, or allowing Google to track your viewing habits.

To be extra sure that Google isn’t getting any of your data, most people agree it’s worth signing up for an Invidious account rather than signing in to the service with your Google account.

In addition, for obvious reasons, we recommend that anybody who wants to prevent Google tracking them also uses Invidious on Firefox rather than Chrome. This will reduce the chance of Google tracking you via your browser.

FreeTube

FreeTube is a desktop app that has been around since 2017. It provides an alternative front end for YouTube designed to give you privacy by preventing Google tracking.

The FreeTube client is available for Mac, Windows, and Linux desktop computers, and it has a wealth of features to let you enjoy YouTube as you normally would – but without any information about being harvested.

Is FreeTube safe?

Originally, FreeTube leveraged the Invidious API to scrape YouTube and provide you with access to your subscriptions and saved videos. Since 2020, however, an updated version has been released, which actually has its own API.

The newer version of FreeTube has improved the app and given FreeTube devs greater control over how the app works. This ensures that it can continue to provide strong privacy for its users now and in the future.

The project is designed from the ground up with privacy in mind, and it is a community-supported project that is considered a completely safe and private way to watch YouTube.

Does Incognito mode make YouTube private?

Using Incognito mode only prevents your viewing history from accumulating in your account. This can allow you to watch videos without anybody being able to tell that you watched those videos if they look at your account.

Unfortunately, this outward appearance of privacy does nothing to prevent Google from tracking your viewing habits. The tech giant can still see which videos you watch in Incognito mode, and it can still use that information to make decisions about you.

Should I use a VPN to watch YouTube privately?

Yes! Even if you use a third-party app like NewPipe to stream YouTube, Google will still be able to track your IP address. This can allow Google to figure out who is streaming videos, even if you aren’t logged into a Google account.

A VPN prevents any tracking by concealing your real IP address from Google when you use NewPipe or any other service to stream YouTube, which will add another layer of privacy when streaming on YouTube via a third-party service.

Check out the best VPNs for YouTube to find out more.

Proxies

It is worth noting that Invidious and FreeTube have a proxy option, which should prevent your IP address from being tracked by Google’s servers. However, we still recommend concealing your IP address yourself with a VPN, as this offers a higher level of protection.

Conclusion

YouTube is a great way to access a wealth of information, but if you want to prevent Google from harvesting useful information about you it is vital to access the service using a third-party app.

All the options provided in this blog offer effective services for streaming YouTube privately, and you can use any one of them depending on which device you own.

If you have any opinions about these services, we are eager to find out what you think! So, if you want to let the ProPrivacy community know which is your favorite, be sure to leave a comment below.

What is a VPN for Spuul?

A VPN is an online service that provides you with privacy and location spoofing capabilities. It works by concealing your IP address from the websites and services you visit, and allows you to pretend to be in a different country.

By connecting to a VPN server elsewhere, Spuul’s servers are led to believe that you’re physically located in that same region, too. As a result, you’ll be able to stream any Spuul content available in that location.

Many people around the world who check out Spuul are disappointed to find out that certain shows and movies aren’t available to them. Unfortunately, this is due to licensing contracts with content producers and copyright holders.

The good news is that by using a VPN, you can “spoof” your location, make Spuul think you’re in India, and unlock its largest catalog of titles!

What features does a VPN for Spuul require?

A Spuul VPN should have, most importantly, servers in India (and other global locations) that can provide access to additional Spuul content.

The VPN providers we’ve recommended in this article all come with a massive selection of servers around the world, and you’ll be able to switch between them to see what’s available on Spuul.

Besides pinpointing VPNs that have the server locations you require to stream more content on Spuul, our experts have selected VPNs that have other vital features:

How to use a VPN for Spuul

Once you have picked a VPN from this guide, it is extremely easy to use it to access content on Spuul. Simply follow the steps below to alter your region and access titles currently unavailable where you live:

  1. Pick a VPN from this guide.
  2. Click through to the VPN’s website and subscribe.
  3. Download the VPN software onto your device.
  4. Install the VPN and log in using your credentials.
  5. Select a VPN location in the menu and click connect.
  6. Navigate to Spuul and check the library to see what additional content is available in that region.

Why do I need a VPN for Spuul?

Spuul is available in the vast majority of international markets. As a result, you may wonder why you would want to use a VPN to stream Spuul. But despite being available worldwide, there are big differences between the shows and movies that are available on the platform around the globe.

As such, a VPN is a cheap and effective way of increasing the amount of content that you have access to. And the best way to stream these shows and movies is by connecting to a server in India, seeing as the region has a vast library of titles.

However, it is also true that Indian producers and copyright holders sometimes make deals to show their content on different Indian streaming platforms and TV networks. This can result in shows and movies not being available on Spuul in certain regions and even throughout India.

Because of this, people living in India may want to connect to a server in the UK or elsewhere in the world. Those countries do not have as many platforms and TV channels that cater to an Indian audience, and for this reason, some shows that aren’t available in India are available there.

The copyright situation will vary from country to country. As a result, it is worth connecting to various different regions using your VPN to see how the Spuul library differs in each.

What can I watch on Spuul?

Spuul is an online streaming service based in India that allows you to stream and download Bollywood movies and TV series online. The service is the ideal resource for anybody who wants to stream Hindi content and regional titles in many different Indian dialects.

The service provides access to a huge number of titles, including new releases from the past year. Spuul even provides access to live TV channels from India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Pakistan.

Spuul now has contracts with production houses like Yash Raj Films, Balaji Telefilms, Shemaroo Entertainment, Viacom 18, Reliance Entertainment, Phantom Films, and UTV Motion Pictures. So if you want to watch movies and TV shows produced by those companies, this is a service well worth considering.

What else can a Spuul VPN do?

VPN technology was primarily developed for providing online privacy by encrypting the user’s data. This prevents local network administrators, Internet Service Providers, Wi-Fi network providers, and the websites you visit from tracking you and your online habits.

In many countries, ISPs work hand in hand with the government. As a result, your internet connection records can be used to place you under surveillance. This is a highly invasive practice that we strongly disagree with because citizens should not have their privacy breached if they have done nothing wrong.

A VPN also provides you with freedom of access, which is a fundamental human right. As a result, you can gain access to the whole, unrestricted internet without suffering censorship at the hands of your government.

Below we have included a full list of all the things you can do with a VPN. We think that this makes a VPN a must-have tool for all internet users, especially considering the low cost of a subscription!

What a VPN can help you do

  1. Access censored news and content
  2. Watch geo-restricted TV stations from overseas
  3. Use geo-restricted services such as internet banking from back home while on vacation or traveling for business
  4. Watch international coverage of sports competitions
  5. Gain security against hackers when on public Wi-Fi
  6. Stream British TV and news with a VPN for BBC iPlayer
  7. Get the most out of your Netflix account with the best VPN for Netflix

Can I use a VPN to stream Spuul at work or in school?

If you are an avid Spuul fan but are having trouble accessing our account in school or at work, this is probably because of the local network administrator. Employers and schools often block access to streaming services, game servers, YouTube, etc.

They do this to stop employees and students from becoming distracted. This can be extremely annoying if you have spare time or a free period, and you want to catch up on an episode of your favorite TV show on Spuul.

The good news is that with a VPN for Spuul you can easily bypass any blocks imposed by a local network admin. The VPN encrypts your data so that your school or employer has no way of knowing what you’re doing online, and the VPN tunnel lets you access the content that has been blocked on the local network. As a result, you can stream Spuul without anybody finding out!

Conclusion

If you love Spuul, you can get more out of your subscription by using a VPN. Copyright holders often restrict where their content is being broadcast, and, as a result, Spuul includes different titles in different regions.

A VPN for Spuul allows you to bypass those restrictions to access all the content available in every region of Spuul. However, it is important to stick to a VPN that works with Spuul and that provides fast enough speeds for streaming in HD.

To get the best possible experience, we highly recommend that you stick to one of the services we have recommended below. This will avoid disappointment and ensure that you get a VPN that provides adequate security and excellent value for money.
